Since 1937, the NAIA’s Athletics Men’s Basketball National Championship has been held annually with the exception of 1944. The tournament was founded by James Naismith to crown a champion for smaller colleges and universities. The NAIA Tournament consists of thirty-two teams competing at one location in one week. Since 1992, the NAIA has hosted two championship divisions. The Division I tournament is played in Kansas City, Missouri while the Division II is held at the Keeter Gymnasium of the College of the Ozarks in Lookout, Missouri.
The College of the Ozarks is committed to provide free education to worthy students who have no sufficient means to enter college education. The college offers students Work Education Program where they work in exchange of a free tuition but with the highest quality of Christian education. The Missouri Department of Education awarded the College of the Ozarks in 1994 as number one in ranking – the only such ranking by the Department as recognition of the college commitment to its mission.
The original purpose of the school was to provide an opportunity for a high school education for young people in the Ozark region. In 1956, the school added two years of junior college to the four-year high school program. By 1964, the Board voted to make the two-year program into a four-year college course that began in September 1965. That same year, the school was given preliminary accreditation by the North Central Association. By August 1971, the association granted the school full-accreditation.
