The popular name of Shepherd of the Hills derived from a famous book written by Harold Bell Wright. The book is the most widely read publication in Missouri. When it was first published in 1907, the interesting story and the details describing the Ozarks regions and the unique characters of the story have drawn thousands of readers. Up to this time, the story of the Shepherd of Hills in the book still continues to inspire people that gives them the opportunity to know the story about the people and its characters who once lived in the Ozarks.
The Shepherd of the Hills today is hosting many forms of special events in Branson. Many of the events feature exciting activities and adventures that await visitors who want to enjoy a unique form of entertainment. Some of the popular attractions and exciting events at the Shepherd of the Hills include the Outdoor Drama, Homestead Tour, and the majestic Inspiration Tower.
The Outdoor Drama is one of the attractions at the Shepherd of the Hills which is held from May to October portrays the life of the people in the Ozark region. The Outdoor Drama is a reenactment of the story in the book. The native people in the region are deeply interconnected with their past as well as the future life of Dad Howitt. Old Matt is a mountain giant, one of the natives in the story with sad memories; Sammy Lane, a beautiful backwoods girl with mind of a lady and with a spirit of a rebel; and many other folks in the hills.
Another beautiful attraction at the Shepherd of the Hills is the Homestead Tour which offers a very exciting tour that gives visitors the chance to hop on a jeep-drawn tram for a guided tour in the homestead. This exciting tour visits the original home of the main characters in the book which is called Old Matt’s Cabin. This home still sets in the original location made of log cabin. During the tour, the visitors can have the opportunity to visit the Inspiration Point, a monument that marks the spot where author Bell Harold Wright camped while compiling the notes for his book. Here, you can see carved statues of six man characters of the Shepherd of the Hills book that stand on Inspiration Point.
Another interesting attraction you will find at the Shepherd of the Hills is the Inspiration Tower. The tower is a beautiful structure that can be viewed from many locations in Branson. The tower is truly amazing which is overlooking the panoramic view of the Ozark Mountain. This magnificent tower covers an area of 160 acres that was constructed in 1989 in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the famous book “Shepherd of the Hills’’.
