The History of the Shepherd of the Hills

The name Shepherd of the Hills derived from a famous book written by Harold Bell Wright. The book is the most widely read publication in Missouri. When the book was first published in 1907, the interesting story and the detailed language describing the Ozarks regions and the characters of the story have drawn thousands of readers. Up to this time the book still continues to inspire people where it gives the opportunity to know the story and its characters. Old Matt's Cabin at the Shepherd of the Hills

The Shepherd of the Hills today is hosting special events in Branson.  Some of these events feature exciting activities and adventures that await visitors who want to enjoy a unique form of entertainment. Some of these exciting events and popular attractions at the Shepherd of the Hills include the Outdoor Drama, Homestead Tour, Inspiration Tower, and Horseback Trail Rides.

The Outdoor Drama at the Shepherd of Hills that is held from May to October portrays the life of the people in the Ozark region. The Outdoor Drama at the Shepherd of the Hills is a reenactment of the story in the book. The native people in the region are deeply interconnected with the past as well as the future life of Dad Howitt. One of the natives in the story is Old Matt, a giant mountain man with sad memories; Sammy Lane, a beautiful backwoods girl with mind of a lady and with a spirit of a rebel; and many other folks in the hills.

The Homestead Tour at the Shepherd of the Hills offers a very exciting tour that gives visitors the chance to hop on a jeep-drawn tram for a guided tour in the homestead. The tour visits the original home of main characters in the book which is called Old Matt’s Cabin. This home still sets in the original location made of log cabin. During the tour, the visitors also visit the Inspiration Point, a monument that marks the spot where author Harold Bell Wright camped while compiling the notes for his book. Here, you can see carved statues of six main characters of the Shepherd of Hills book that stand on Inspiration Point.

Another interesting attraction at the Shepherd of the Hills is the Inspiration Tower. The tower is a tall beautiful structure that can be viewed from many locations in Branson. The sight is truly amazing that is overlooking the panoramic view of the Ozark Mountain. This fantastic tower covers an area of 160 acres that was constructed in 1989 in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the famous book “Shepherd of the Hills”. Horseback Trail Rides at the Shepherd of the Hills is another attraction that offers exciting horseback ride. This 30-minute horseback ride will take you through the historic homestead and the majestic Ozark hills.
