In 1986, Marty signed with MTM Records. It released Trains Make Me Lonesome that won him a nomination by the Academy of Country Music as Top New Male Vocalist. In 1995, Marty signed with the Critique/BMB label.

He was also honored at the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony with President Obama in December 2010. Merle continues to perform and released a new album in 2010, “I Am What I Am,” and performed the title song on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno in February 2011.
