Some of the exciting events and attractions that can be enjoyed at the Shepherd of the Hills include the Historic Homestead Tour, Inspiration Tower, Outdoor Drama, and Vigilante Extreme ZipRider.
The Historic Homestead Tour at the Shepherd of the Hills offers 60 minutes guided tour exploring the surrounding on a jeep-drawn tram. The tour will make a first stop at the original home of the main characters in the book called Old Matt’s Cabin. This old log cabin structure still sets in the original location. Inside this log cabin, you will find numerous historical items, antiques, including clothing worn by John and Anna Ross, tools, photographs, cooking utensils, some of their furniture, and much more.
Next stop of the Homestead Tour will be at a quaint church that relocated to the area from Morgan County, Missouri. The church was constructed in 1902 and it was in this place where Harold Bell Wright used to preach during his time. From here you will see the place where Outdoor Drama is performed. You will also see up close the Old Matt’s steam engine and grist mill. The site of the Homestead Tour played an important role in the immensely famous novel Shepherd of the Hills.
The tour takes visitors throughout the property including the campsite and to the Inspiration Point that stood in the second highest mountain peak in Missouri where Wright used to assemble his notes for his best selling novel. On this site, you will find a monument of Harold Bell Wright and the statues of the characters in the area that include Old Matt, Young Matt, The Shepherd, Sammy Lane, Aunt Mollie, and Little Pete.
The Inspiration Tower is a fascinating structure at the Shepherd of the Hills that offer visitors a panoramic view of the Ozark Mountain. This beautiful attraction can be viewed from many locations in Branson. This magnificent building was completed in 1989 to commemorate 100th anniversary of the Shepherd of the Hills book. Your visit to the Inspiration Tower gives you the chance to see a very inspiring 360 degree view of the majestic Ozark hills. On a clear day, you can see the beautiful horizon that goes far beyond the Arkansas region.
Beautifully constructed at a cost of $1.5 million, the Inspiration Tower features a foundation that holds rebar with a weight of 34.5 tons. It is made up of enormous glass materials enough to cover a third of a football field. This sturdy tower can stand against a wind of 172 miles per hour and can withstand strong winds up to 224 miles an hour. This magnificent structure features two glass elevators that go up to the highest point. The tower is open year round from 9am to 5 pm.
The Outdoor Drama is a wonderful show attraction at the Shepherd of the Hills that starts nightly at 8 pm from May to October. The drama is a reenactment of the story in the book of Harold Bell Wright. In the story, you will come to know a newcomer to the Ozarks called Dad Howitt who had a kind heart but with a troubled past. The native people in the Ozarks hills are deeply interconnected with the past and future life of Dad Howitt. The natives in the story including Old Matt is a giant mountain man with sad memories; Sammy Lane, a beautiful backwoods girl with the mind of a lady but with a spirit of a rebel; and a Little Pete, a boy who has surprising parentage; and many other folks in the hills.
The story will surprise you with many twists and turns and will leave you confused about the things to happen next. The drama not only features actors and actresses, but also horses. Wash Gibbs, who is a troublemaker in the neighborhood will show a good impression as he rides on a big white horse (known as Egor around the barn). A horse with blue eyes, Ace, and Twister with a crooked ear, portray the play both as Baldknobber horses. A beautiful girl Sammy Lane makes a quite ride entrance on her white pony, Smokie. During intermission, you can have the chance to be a part of the show – Old Matt will invite some of the audience to come down on stage to join the party.
The set of the Outdoor drama is beautifully laid out in such a way that every spectator enjoys a comfortable seat in the amphitheater. The set of the show features open square dance floor, a steam engine replica, a small cabin, an antique gristmill, and more. The set also features entrances that will keep you wonder where to enter to see the characters ride up and run out next.
The Vigilante Extreme ZipRider at the Shepherd of the Hills is favorite outdoor fun in Branson where you can enjoy exciting and daring zipline ride. This zipline ride swings from above the Inspiration Tower and head down two hundred foot drop and let you experience a breathtaking and exhilarating ride as you hover above the tower and see yourself flying over the treetops of the Ozarks. Travelling at a speed of fifty miles an hour, your thrilling ride with the zipline will let you see picturesque views of the trails, trees, barns, and occasional animals.
The Vigilante Extreme ZipRider was named after the Baldknobbers, a group of vigilantes that lived in the 1800s. The unique story of the Baldknobbers played an important role in naming the zipline ride. This fascinating zipline features four ziplines that are launched from the station at the top of the Inspiration Tower. The riders sit in a carriage similar to a carseat which has adjustable design to fit riders 75 pounds to 275 pounds. The riders are simply strapped into the harness, no orientation is given before launching and when the launch pad gate opens, the zipline ride starts.
Vigilante Extreme Ziprider is not like a traditional zipline ride. It has a patented retrieval system where riders are brought back up to the tower with the push of a button. The rider has nothing to worry about brake system or speed adjustment as the patented Ziprider features a line cable that controls the speed and the brake system.
