Now making the Track Family Fun Park in Branson its new home, this iconic Ferris Wheel was once Chicago’s Navy Pier Ferris Wheel. This giant 15-story wheel gives visitors the opportunity to get some picturesque views of the Ozarks landscape. This fascinating attraction in Branson features 40 gondolas that can hold 240 riders and it lights up the evening with some 16,000 LED lights encircling the wheel.
The Navy Pier Ferris Wheel in Chicago was inspired by the original Ferris wheel designer George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. who made the revolving steel observation wheel for the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago of 1893. That engineering feat was America’s answer to the recently completed Eiffel Tower in Paris that time. The original Navy Pier Ferris Wheel in Chicago was opened on July 1, 1995 and it had its last run on September 27, 2015. That ferris wheel was ridden by nearly 17 million people. It was an iconic landmark and part of Chicago’s skyline for 20 years. It was illuminated by 2,500 Edison incandescent lamps and had about 36 passenger cars that can hold 60 people each, making a total capacity of 2,160 passengers.
With its move to Branson, Missouri in 2016, the new “Branson Ferris Wheel” serves as a new icon in the Ozarks in a very different setting. The 16,000 LED fixtures of new ferris wheel in Branson can hold individual lights by the thousands. You may not believe that the new Branson Ferris Wheel features over 144,000 individual lights. The lights are remotely controlled to light up Branson’s sky in an array of colors and animations. But there’s some interesting facts about this Ferris Wheel. The big wheel is built to last for generations. It was constructed using over 4 million pounds of concrete, over 6 million pounds of gravel and 80,000 pounds of steel, and launching areas that go down as far as 23 feet into the solid rock beneath the wheel.
Located in the heart of Branson, Branson Ferris Wheel presents “Electrify”, a music and light spectacular show seen every night at 9:00 pm, 10:00 pm, and 10:55 pm. This free show will electrify your senses with 144,000 electrifying lights that dance to music through the Track 4 sound system.
